In another great video essay by Michael Tucker he takes a look at the similarities in the way two filmmakers approach the topic of the obsessed artist. While the two films tell completely different stories, they still have many similar beats and ideas in common. As filmmakers we can learn a lot from these two films and especially how the differences in the film express the resolution of the protagonist.
A comparison of how the tale of the obsessed artist is told in Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, and Vincent Cassel, and Damien Chazelle’s “Whiplash” starring Miles Teller and J. K. Simmons.
