Theatrical Distribution for Indie Filmmakers

In this episode, Nancy Gerstman discusses the world of Theatrical Distribution for Independent Film. Nancy has a distinct point of view on the topic of distribution. She worked with Landmark Theater Corp., the largest independent theater chain in the U.S. In 1998, she co-founded Zeitgeist Films with Emily Russo.  She is in demand as a juror, panelist and commentator on issues related to indie film. She is also permanent Artist-in-Residence in the Master’s Program in Media and Communication Arts at CCNY.

Gerstman and Russo have distributed first films by notable directors Todd Haynes, Christopher Nolan, Francois Ozon, the Quay Brothers and Gianni di Gregorio and their catalog also includes films from the world’s finest independent filmmakers including Agnes Varda, Guy Maddin, Olivier Assayas, Jia Zhang-ke, Atom Egoyan, Abbas Kiarostami, Jennifer Baichwal, Derek Jarman, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Peter Greenaway, Philippe Garrel, Yvonne Rainer, Jan Svankmajer, Laura Poitras, Astra Taylor, Raoul Peck, Gonzalo Arijon, Greta Schiller, Sergey Dvortsevoy and Jacques Demy.

Zeitgeist Films is an American independent film distributor based in New York City founded in 1988 by co-Presidents Nancy Gerstman and Emily Russo. Films distributed by Zeitgeist are strongly auteur-driven by directors such as Christopher Nolan, Guy Maddin, Atom Egoyan, Todd Haynes, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Olivier Assayas, Abbas Kiarostami, Deepa Mehta, Jan Švankmajer and the Brothers Quay. The expansive Zeitgeist film library includes Trouble the Water, The Corporation, Jellyfish, Examined Life, Into Great Silence, Ten and Irma Vep. In June 2008, the MoMA honored two decades of Zeitgeist successes with a month-long, twenty film retrospective entitled Zeitgeist: The Films of Our Time, exhibiting the distributor’s twenty most critically acclaimed, intellectually stimulating titles.
