Movie Masterclass: The Seven Samurai

For the last few weeks I have been revisiting the works of the great Akira Kurosawa, specifically The Seven Samurai. There are few movies that have had the impact on modern filmmaking as The Seven Samurai. Kurosawa’s use of movment, composition, and editing to tell the story are legendary. In the following video, analyzes Seven Samurai in great detail and illuminates many of the techniques Kurosawa used to create atmosphere and tell the story both verbally and visually. For anyone who plans on directing a film, or even someone who simply wants to understand Kurosawa’s genius, I highly recommend this lecture. And if you haven’t seen The Seven Samurai, it goes without saying that it will make you a better filmmaker.
