P.T. Anderson: The Director Series

P.T. Anderson has been a hero of mine ever since 1997, when I first saw Boogie Nights. Anderson is only a few years older than me, but the film reflected the writing and directing capabilities of someone much older. Suffice it to say, I walked out of the theater with a mixed feeling of exhilaration and anxiety. Anxiety because I felt like I would never be anywhere near as good as this guy.

4 Basic Elements of a PT Anderson Film

By Lanny Boyer

This video essay breaks PTA’s style down into four basic areas. Although there are a ton of elements that go into his creative process from start to finish that aren’t outlined here, you can get a lot of mileage from following the following rules:

1.) Move the camera!
2.) Incorporate light and color into your production design
3.) Write and shoot for characters. The performers will be drawn to work that gives them meaty scripts to work from.
4.) Include sound and score into your process from the onset.

If you still haven’t had enough, here’s a 2 hour interview with PT Anderson on WTF with Marc Maron
